The Lucie® micro drone

The Lucie micro drone is our flagship offering and delivers vast creative freedom. Each autonomous Lucie micro drone is equipped with a RGBW light. When precisely choreographed, the Lucie micro drones form a cluster of flying lights, and together, their smooth, intricate motions work in harmony to produce captivating results. The versatility of the Lucie micro drones means you can achieve a variety of different effects. Fly only a few for an intimate scene with performers on stage. Or fill the air above the stage with a swarm of glittering fireflies for a more immersive experience.

TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN TRUST

Weighing only 50g (1.8oz), the Lucie micro drone can perform above artists without any safety concerns. Optimized for permanent installations and touring productions, they are ultra-safe, reliable, and easy to use.

Indoor positioning system.

The system consists of Kedge™ localization units that reliably define the boundaries of the flight space and allows for maximum creativity. This allows our drones to perform their choreography without cameras, carpets or other limitations. Robust and reliable, it has operated in a wide variety of venues and conditions, including on ice, in a desert and even next to flame throwers.

Lucie® charging station.

To house the Lucie micro drones before their performance, we provide charging station racks. Each rack hosts up to 40 Lucie micro drones and is an all-in-one charging, storage, and transportation solution.

Custom Projects

If you want to create something never seen before, we also work on bespoke, custom projects built to your specifications. From custom design, to engineering projects and processes, we’ll work with you to deliver something spectacular.

Costumes

Imagine a stage full of floating jellyfish, flying disco balls or swaying flowers. Our drone costume designers can create bespoke costumes that turn our Lucie® micro drones into flying scenery, props and even creatures. These ultra-light, flight-tested costumes can be used alone, or in tandem with a flying light show to add an extra dimension to your event.

Stage Flyer

The Stage Flyer drones were part of a custom project developed for Cirque du Soleil’s Broadway show Paramour. By design they carried lampshades and became dancing props alongside the performers. But this is just one example. The Stage Flyer drones can also carry payloads including cameras, mirrors or other stage effects, such as confetti, for more dramatic possibilities. For dependable safety, each Stage Flyer drone is designed with our failsafe technology. This means it can land safely even if a battery, motor, connector, propeller or sensor fails.

Drake 2018: Aubrey & the Three Migos

Touring with Drake since July 2018, Verity Studios’ micro drones light up the stage with flying waves and a drone swarm cloud.

About the tour

Grammy award-winning Canadian artist Drake is one of the best-selling rappers of the 21st century. Performing to audiences of more than 50,000 people, his previous North American tour broke the record for the highest grossing hip-hop tour of all time. This is a first for the Lucie micro drones, debuting with a rap artist on the back of touring with rock band Metallica and Circus Knie.

Elevate, a song on Drake’s new album Scorpion, opens with the micro drones swarming onto the stage to surround Drake in a cloud of lights to the roar of the audience. In another guest appearance, the Lucie micro drones create a glittering wave in the song Look Alive before forming a red 3D cross that rotates around Drake.

With 25 locations in less than 5 months, the Drake tour is a tough environment for any technology. But having already created drone swarms to tour with Metallica and Circus Knie, Verity’s indoor drone show system is up to the challenge. After the Verity team set it up, the Drake crew took over and is now operating the drones night after night.

Swiss National Circus Knie

Swiss National Circus Knie

Featuring 32 Lucie micro drones performing in unison with acrobats under the enchanting roof of a big top provides feast for the senses.

What we did.

Switzerland’s national circus travels the country each year with its acrobats and menagerie. In the past, Circus Knie toured with elephants, a highlight of the show. But after deciding to retire its elephants to a peaceful life in the Knies Kinderzoo (children’s zoo), Circus Knie needed to replace them with something just as spectacular.

So, Circus Knie decided to add 32 of Lucie® micro drones to the mix. Dancing under the roof of the big-top circus tent, the drones perform alongside the family act, which includes Franco Knie Jr., his wife Linna and son Chris Rui. “This is a world premier for Swiss audiences,” said Franco Knie Jr. “Such an act is unique in a traveling circus.”

With this act, Knie Jr. was excited about combining technology and tradition. "At Circus Knie, we always make sure that we present modern elements in addition to tradition to offer a show for young and old," he said. “In search of components for the modern touch, we soon became aware of Verity Studios’ fantastic drone shows online. After first discussions, we quickly agreed that the drones should become one of the highlights of our 2018 program.”

Based on the feedback from audiences, it was the right decision. “We have received much positive feedback from visitors who appreciate the drone show, especially the interaction between light and music. We also often hear from visitors that they like it because it's something completely new and different in a circus show.”

A traveling circus is a challenging environment, but Knie Jr. said Verity was up to the challenge. “The experts at Verity Studios have responded very well and quickly to the special needs we face in the traveling circus business.”

This is the world’s first autonomous indoor drone swarm to tour with a circus.

The Lucie™ micro drones opened the 2018 RSA Conference in a one-time performance at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

What we did.

Opening the 2018 RSA Conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, 32 Lucie® micro drones flew in harmony with 3 opera singers.

The micro drones were carefully choreographed to convey the changing emotions of the act. “When the drones first appeared, the song was light and melodic – and the drones were like fireflies and beautiful,” said Sandra Toms from the RSA Conference. “As the song changed to dark and moody, the drones changed to an ominous red color.”

RSA is the world’s leading cybersecurity conference, so the addition of cutting-edge drone technology ideally complemented the opening act. “When the drones came back, people in the back jumped up and used their phones to video tape what was happening,” said Toms. “It was unexpected, and the audience appreciated the surprise.”

Fantastic Journey

Verity Studios’ Lucie micro drones are featured as part of the on-board entertainment for Princess Cruises’ new ship, the Majestic Princess.

What we did

Princess Cruises launched a new cruise ship in April 2017: the Majestic Princess. Onboard was a world first, a swarm of flying Lucie® micro drones dancing and interacting with a singer onstage. The show drones synchronize their movements and lights to the show’s music and stage effects, which include stage lighting, projections, and stage fog as part of the ship’s show: Fantastic Journey. 

Show director, Danny Teeson, said the choreographed drones were “visually stunning”. “The drones speak for themselves. To have a fantastic singer be elevated amongst choreographed drones – you don’t need anything else. It just transports you for that moment.” 

Cruise ships are challenging environments for many technology installations and this success speaks to the maturity of Verity’s indoor drone show system.

“We told Verity it would be a challenge, but they said ’we can do it’,” said Tracy Andronek, Production Operations Automation, Scenic and Drones.

The Lucie micro drones have now fascinated audiences in over 100 performances, with many more to come. “They were just mesmerized at the drones and you can see people pointing and saying ‘ahhhh’ during the number,” said Andronek.
This is the world’s first autonomous indoor drone swarm performance on a cruise ship.

Starlight Express

As part of the celebrations for the musical’s 30th year on stage, Starlight Express decided to use 28 Lucie® micro drones in the emotional pinnacle of the show: the Starlight Sequence. 

What we did.

The rock musical STARLIGHT EXPRESS tells the story of a child’s toy trains magically coming to life and racing against each other to be crowned the fastest engine in the world. Underdog Rusty ultimately wins the race and the heart of first-class coach Pearl when he is inspired by the legend of the Starlight Express.

Starlight Express press officer Frederika Gerwe said that though she’s seen lots of different types of lighting in shows, the Lucie micro drones were something special. “It was just magical. I’ve never seen something like the drones before. I had goose bumps everywhere.” 

“It was quite amazing, because the audience just did not really recognize drones,” said Starlight Express managing director Burkhard Koch. “It was just the magic of the whole scene, which was of course created by the drones flying around.” 

In such a quiet and emotional scene, the team at Starlight Express had some concerns about the noise 28 drones could make. However, they quickly realized this would not be an issue. “The most incredible thing was that we expected them to interfere with the sound, but it was not the case at all. It was really nice to integrate them in a musical way,” said Koch.

He was also impressed with the way the creative team, technicians and Verity worked together to create something unique and powerful. “We worked really as a team. We created some completely new things which have never been seen. Getting these classical lighting designs together with this new technology is fantastic,” said Koch.

Metallica

Metallica is currently on tour featuring a Synthetic Swarm of Verity Studios’ Lucie micro drones, bringing a new dimension to their recent hit “Moth into Flame”

What we did.

Heavy metal band Metallica has been traveling the world with their WorldWired tour since summer 2017. To kick off the arena tour, they decided to raise the stakes for their song Moth into Flame with a world first. As the music builds, 99 of Verity’s Lucie® micro drones emerge from below the stage to swarm around the band. This is the world’s first autonomous drone swarm performance in a major touring act. The drone show was produced in collaboration with TAIT Towers.  

“After the first night we successfully piloted the drones, James Hetfield walked over to a microphone and announced to the audience how “f—ing cool” the show had been because of Verity’s drones,” said Dan Braun, show director for the band Metallica. “It’s magnificent what they are doing, whether you see it live or on social media. The programmers of the drones do a great job.”

Verity Studios is making its debut on the American sports scene as a highlight of the New York Knicks season home opener at Madison Square Garden.

What we did.

Lighting up the sky at Madison Square Garden, Verity’s Lucie® micro drones were most valuable players in the 2017-2018 New York Knicks season. Featuring in the pre-game show, the micro drones flew in sync with 16 dancers and their LED costumes in front of more than 20,000 audience members for 40 shows. The micro drones flew above the Knicks City Dancers in a variety of configurations before landing gently in the performers’ outstretched hands.

An ice rink in Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas ship hosts 1977, an ice skating spectacular.

What we did

The show opens with an aerial ballet by 48 Lucie® micro drones whose lights change in sync to the music. The Lucie micro drones sparkle and flash on the ice before forming an arch. As a skater passes under the arch, the show begins.

“We were blown away by 1977, the ice show, which uses incredible technology to fly swarms of drones like tiny fireflies,” said the publication Cruise Passenger.

Cruise ships alone are challenging environments for many technology installations, and the ice rink adds another dimension to this. But the Verity indoor drone show system was up to the task.

"They're all aware each other, so they get out of each other's way when they get close. It's really clever stuff," said Nick Weir, VP of Entertainment at Royal Caribbean.

This is the world’s first autonomous indoor drone swarm performance on an ice rink.

2047 Apologue

2047 Apologue is a stage performance directed by Zhang Yimou (The Great Wall, opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics), which premiered at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

What we did.

Masterminded by Zhang Yimou, the same director who produced the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, 2047 Apologue performed in China and in Europe in 2017 and 2018. Premiering at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, a swarm of Lucie® micro drones performed in a 7-minute show segment alongside a musical ensemble featuring Grammy award-winner Wu Tong. Beginning with only a few drones gliding through the air to ethereal music, more drones appear as the speed picks up, creating a flashing spiral of twinkling lights.

Changi Airport Singapore continues to stake its claim as the World’s favorite destination airport with a dazzling performance in Changi’s Mystical Garden, a large Christmas installation in Changi Airport Terminal 3.

What we did.

One of the world’s favorite airports, Changi Airport Singapore created a spectacular Christmas installation for the 2017 holiday season. Featured in Changi’s Mystical Garden, 29 Lucie® micro drones performed twice a day in the world’s largest airport drone show. As Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty frolicked about in this magical setting, the Dance of the Fireflies took place above, delighting the crowd with a dynamic, airborne choreography of shapes and motion all synced to the familiar songs of Christmas.

Cirque du Soleil's Paramour

Verity Studios’ work was featured in Paramour, the Broadway show by Cirque du Soleil. Contributions included the choreography of the show segment, the frame design and lighting design of the lamp shade costumes, and all technologies related to the autonomous show drones and their operation.

What we did.

During their run on Broadway, the Stage Flyer drones completed 398 public shows, including more than 7,000 autonomous takeoffs, flights, and landings, in front of an audience of up to 2,000 people per show, all of them without safety nets. The system was entirely client-operated, with the theatre staff providing routine maintenance and the show’s automation carpenter running all shows. Verity Studios provided maintenance services twice per year.

Drake's tech-filled concerts use drones as backup dancers

At Drake's concert at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night, the air was filled with more than just the roar of 18,000 fans.

There were also 88 micro drones flying around the rapper during two songs in his two-hour show, synced up with his tracks Elevate and Look Alive. They hovered around with bright lights, changing colors from red to blue to white, like a swarm of large fireflies twinkling above the rapper.

While it may not have been the most eye-catching display -- at one point the stage transformed into a giant iPhone X scrolling through Instagram, and then there was the floating Ferrari above the crowd -- it was likely the most technologically innovative stunt in a show filled with spectacles. That's because unlike other drone shows, this mini-Air Force was programmed to take flight autonomously.

The elaborate choreography was coordinated between Drake's production team and Verity Studios, a Swiss company that boasts investments from Sony and Kitty Hawk, the flying car startup from Google's founder Larry Page.

Drake lights up his live performances with a drone show

On a sticky late-August night in New York, Drake has chosen to share the stage with a non-human entity. As he bounces around the stage during “Elevate,” a cloud of drones illuminates the dark space above him.

Drake is an artist shaped by the internet, one whose latest meme-frenzy of a song, “In My Feelings,” defined the entire summer through dance challenges and memes. It’s not surprising that the artist would incorporate buzzy, high-tech entertainment into his tours. It is shocking that he’s still one of the few stage performers to do so, given the popularity of the aerial devices.

Drone company Verity Studios has been steadily building its live performance profile. Its drones have flown in performances by Cirque du Soleil and Metallica. But the Canadian rapper represents a new high point, says Verity founder Raffaello D’Andrea. “Drake is about as good as we can get.”

Head of Software Engineering Luca Gherardi

Luca Gherardi became employee #1 after joining Verity in 2014 as a software engineer. Originally from Italy, Luca moved to Switzerland in 2013 to do his post-doctoral research at ETH after meeting Raffaello D’Andrea. At ETH, he worked in the Flying Machine Arena under D’Andrea, who then asked Luca to join Verity shortly after it was founded.

As the head of software engineering, Luca is involved in all aspects of software design and development. His work centers more specifically on the software behind Verity’s proprietary localization system, which is what enables our drones to fly autonomously indoors.

What excites him about his role at Verity is the diversity and complexity of the challenges he is faced with. The responsibilities in the software team range from the embedded design of drivers for sensors and micro-controller peripherals, to the development of the application user interfaces for the client-facing software we run our shows from.

“We work on problems that haven’t been addressed before. Most of the time, you can’t just research something and use existing solutions. For us, it’s more about designing new algorithms or taking inspiration from best practice techniques from other domains and tailoring them to solve our unique challenges.”

The elimination of a single point of failure is a key requirement for any engineering done at Verity. With system consisting of hundreds of different components that cooperate to achieve a common goal, the engineering team works to ensure each component is important but not critical.  Though requiring a lot of resources, it also makes the system very robust and reliable.

“Designing a system like this requires consideration of all the possible problems, safety and security concerns from the beginning. It takes a lot of effort, but it’s a big reward when you see that our system could operate on Broadway for a year for 400 shows without any problems.”

Luca was also involved in the production of SPARKED, a video collaboration between Cirque du Soleil, ETH Zurich and Verity Studios.

So, what is a software engineer with a post-doc from ETH doing at a live events company? Unlike many other opportunities in the engineering field, the work done at Verity is unique, challenging… and used by bands like Metallica.

“We create an innovative product that is unique in the world of live events. Our indoor drones are seen by millions, and people love it. It’s really rewarding to be at a show and see the reactions of the audience. In a high-end show, people expect to see lights, smoke effects and maybe fireworks, but no one expects to see drones."

The accomplished and international team at Verity is also a big drawcard for Luca.

“We have a very diverse and multicultural team. Everyone is super smart, and you can learn a lot every day. People are really motivated, and the success of the team comes before the success of an individual. Everyone is ready to help when needed.”

The London Design Festival celebrates and promotes London as the design capital of the world. We will be there in the frame of Design Switzerland’s presence at London designjunction 2018, with the support of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, running drone show demonstrations and exhibiting our drone costumes. 

We'll be running drone show demonstrations at Bloomsbury House. It is a historical, Georgian building located near the Holborn, Chancery Lane and Tottenham Court tube stations. We will be located in the Ascham room, on the top floor of the building.

At the London designjunction in the OXO Tower we will be exhibiting our costumes and be available for any questions or media requests.

New funding allows “flying machines” to perform at more live events, Verity Studios founder Raffaello D’Andrea tells Robotics Business Review

Verity Studios might be the only robotics company that can say it has toured with Metallica and performed with Cirque du Soleil. Since 2014, the company has produced autonomous indoor drone shows for those groups and others, including Madison Square Garden, and Princess Cruises.

In June, the company raised $18 million in Series A funding, led by Fontinalis Partners, with participation from Airbus Ventures, Sony Innovation Fund, and Kitty Hawk. The company said it would use the funding to expand its live events business, focusing on U.S. growth, as well as expanding into other commercial verticals.

The company’s founder, Raffaello D’Andrea, was one of the co-founders of Kiva Systems, a pioneer in the mobile robotics arena that was acquired by Amazon in 2012. Robotics Business Review spoke with D’Andrea about the funding, his vision for the company and his thoughts on the public perception of drones.

The back-up dancers of the future: a swarm of Lucie® micro drones are on the road with Drake around North America.

ZURICH– August 15, 2018 – Verity Studios AG, the global leader in indoor drone technology, announced today that swarms of Lucie micro drones are performing with Drake in his 2018 Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour.  Grammy award-winning Canadian artist Drake is one of the best-selling rappers of the 21st century. Performing to audiences of more than 50,000 people, his previous North American tour broke the record for the highest grossing hip-hop tour of all time. This tour is a first for the Lucie micro drones, debuting with a rap artist on the back of touring with rock band Metallica and Circus Knie. Elevate, a song on Drake’s new album Scorpion, opens with the micro drones swarming onto the stage to surround Drake in a cloud of lights to the roar of the audience. In another guest appearance, the Lucie micro drones create a glittering wave in the song Look Alive before forming a red 3D cross that rotates around Drake.

"All you see is magic"

Raffaello D’Andrea, founder of Verity and co-founder of Amazon Robotics, said unlike many other show drones, Verity’s drones are operated solely by the Drake tour staff and perform their choreographies autonomously.  “People often describe technologies they’ve never seen before as ‘magic’. This is also how people talk about our drones when they see them live for the first time. By bringing robotics and AI to live events, we are creating magic. It’s spectacular to see a swarm of drones performing a perfectly synchronized aerial ballet without a single drone pilot in sight. Of course, what’s powering this performance is advanced technology, but when you sit in the audience, all you see is magic.”

"What the teams created together is visually stunning"

As part of its creative services, Verity employs drone choreographers and drone costume designers to bring its clients’ visions to life. The creative concept for the drone choreography came from conversations with the Drake creative team.  “When the Drake team approached us, they said they wanted something that had never been seen before. Our drone choreographers worked in partnership with Drake’s creative team to come up with various concepts for the show, like geometric shapes and drone tornadoes, before deciding on the final choreographies. What the teams created together is visually stunning. We relish pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with our technology when pursuing our clients’ creative vision,” said D’Andrea.

Verity Studios drones shine in Starlight Express

Lucie® micro drones take center stage in the popular Andrew Lloyd Weber musical in Bochum, Germany. 

Verity Studios AG, the global leader in indoor drone technology, and Mehr! Entertainment, Germany’s largest theater group, announced last week that 28 Lucie micro drones are performing in STARLIGHT EXPRESS as part of the musical’s 30th year on stage.

The rock musical STARLIGHT EXPRESS tells the story of a child’s toy trains magically coming to life and racing against each other to be crowned the fastest engine in the world. Underdog Rusty ultimately wins the race and the heart of first-class coach Pearl when he is inspired by the legend of the Starlight Express.

Verity’s Lucie micro drones create a magical moment  as they circle and interact with Rusty in the emotional pinnacle of the show: the Starlight Sequence.

Managing Director Burkhard Koch said the micro drones played a key part in the reimagination of the musical for its 30th year on stage. “STARLIGHT EXPRESS is the longest running musical in the world. It even has the Guinness World Record for the most visitors to a musical in a single theater. To keep surprising people, we needed to create a spectacle, a “wow” moment. Verity’s sparkling drones bring some unexpected magic to the show.” 

The 28 Lucie micro drones perform their choreographies autonomously and are operated entirely by STARLIGHT EXPRESS staff. “It’s fantastic that such a sophisticated system is so easy for us to use,” said Koch. “We’ve used the system for 13 public performances now, and we haven’t had a single hiccup.” 

Verity’s drones have played starring roles in other musicals, notably as dancing lampshades on Broadway in Paramour by Cirque du Soleil. But this is the first time 28 Lucie micro drones have completely circled an actor on stage. “Immersive experiences are becoming increasingly popular as a form of artistic expression. But when we’re flying our drones so close to performers or audience members, safety is of utmost importance,” said Verity founder Raffaello D’Andrea. “This is why we have designed our indoor drone system with safety and reliability in mind. To date, our drones have completed over 30,000 autonomous flights, safely above people, in more than 20 countries. It’s a testament to the safety and reliability of our technology.” 

The new  STARLIGHT EXPRESS opened to a crowd of over 1600 on the 12th of June after six successful previews. The 2018 season will continue with 7 shows per week from Wednesday till Sunday.

Drone costume designer, Léa Pereyre has recently been exploring the effect of UV costumes on our Lucie® micro drones. The costumes, though still in development, can produce the effect of underwater creatures.   

Drone costume designer Léa Pereyre was prompted to start exploring UV costumes when investigating a potential collaboration with a night club. “I tried to understand the elements typically found in a night club venue that I could use to enhance our drones’ performance. It ended up being nearly obvious that using UV light with UV reactive material is perfect for creating flying sculptures”.

The effect of UV paint and reactive materials is impactful, even from a distance. It opens the possibility of turning our very light and safe Lucie micro drones into floating characters, props and scenery.

Léa can see how this effect can offer many new opportunities. “First, UV light helps you to focus on a specific element. You can make select elements appear or disappear which helps create more magic around the costumes.”

Even without a costume, painting the Lucie guard in UV paint also creates a stunning effect. “You could also imagine a double use of our Lucie micro drones,” said Léa. “If the guard is covered by UV paint, the drones could perform their light show and then suddenly transform into flying sculptures thanks to a switch of ambient light.”

Verity Studios Founder Raffaello D'Andrea

Founder Raffaello D’Andrea is a robotics and AI expert, an entrepreneur, an artist and a professor at the ETH Zurich. Prior to Verity, he co-founded industrial robotics company Kiva Systems, which was sold to Amazon for $775 million US dollars in 2012 and later re-branded as Amazon Robotics. He is also a new media artist whose works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and are part of the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada and France’s FRAC Centre. In bringing the robotics and AI revolution to live events, Verity combines his passions for technology, entrepreneurship and the arts.

D'Andrea founded Verity in 2014 with co-founders Markus Waibel and Markus Hehn as a spin-off of ETH Zurich. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the design and creation of flying machines. Even before founding the company, he and other members of our team were exploring the combination of technology and the arts at the Flying Machine Arena, where they created flying robots that performed aerial ballet and acrobatics, juggled balls and balanced poles. In front of a live audience, the team also created the world’s first structure created by autonomous flying machines. 

D'Andrea also presented one of the most-watched TED tech talks of all time in 2013. As of the time of writing it had achieved over 10 million views. Watch it below.

Verity Studios AG announced June 5 that it had raised $18 million in Series A funding to expand its live events business in the U.S. and in other areas.

Investors in the Zurich-based company included the venture capital firm Fontinalis Partners, as well as Airbus Ventures, Sony Innovation Fund, and Kitty Hawk. One of the terms of the financing is that Chris Cheever, co-founder and partner at Fontinalis, will join Verity’s board of directors.


“Verity has assembled an exceptional team, with credibility, valuable IP, and extensive technical know-how, all while building a fast-growing business in the live events market,” Cheever said in a statement. “Our firm was founded to invest in and help scale the world’s best mobility technologies, and what Verity has developed has broad applicability beyond entertainment, in the drone industry and in many commercial contexts.”

Want to add some extra wow-factor to a live event? Drone shows are transforming the landscape and leaving audiences blown away. Leading provider Verity Studios discusses its soaring appeal.

If you’re looking to create something truly deserving of the words ‘wow’ and ‘factor’ for your next live event, you might want to consider the possibilities provided by drones.

The market for drones (outside of a military setting) for personal and commercial use has exploded in recent years with sales forecasts predicting sales of nearly 30 million units by 2021.

One of the fastest growth areas is in the commercial space (170,000 sales in 2017, up from 110,000 in 2016*) and the use of drones for LED ‘drone shows’ has become big business and widely adopted in the entertainment industry.

Recent high profile examples include the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in PyeongChang, at which Intel performed a choreographed light display using 1,218 drones to create various animations, including the Olympic rings.

Drones were also used to promote the release of Wonder Woman on DVD, lighting up the LA sky with various related imagery associates with the film. But it’s not just large open outdoor spaces where drone shows are taking place, with musicians, theatre productions and even airports using drones to wow visitors with a barely believable performance more akin to special FX in a science fiction movie than reality.

Working in close collaboration with TAIT, who custom built the in-the-round stage design for Metallica’s WorldWired Tour, Verity Studios provided the touring industry’s first autonomous indoor drone swarm, with 99 micro drones dancing like fireflies for the song, “Moth Into Flame.” The set and stage design, designed by the show’s director, Dan Braun, features an immersive concert experience with a 44' x 44' square main-stage equipped with several prop lifts located in the center of the arena.


James Hetfield, lead singer and co-founder of Metallica, has wanted to use drones in the show for several years, but as Braun points out, “I used to say they weren’t safe, so we sort of got away from the idea, but kept it on the back burner. Then I spoke with Adam Davis at TAIT, and he told us about their relationship with Verity and about the potential possibilities, and that’s how we got into using drones on this tour. As the show’s designer and director, I thought we should put them in ‘Moth Into Flame,’ as it’s been a very successful song for the band for a long time. And after the first night of the tour in Copenhagen, James said the drones were great, so we were happy, and we always want to keep the band happy.”

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide drone shows for outdoor venues?

Our Lucie micro drones only weigh 50g (1.8oz), which makes them very safe when flying near people, but due to their light weight, they are unsuitable for outdoor use. Generally, we do not operate outdoors, except in areas very well protected from wind and weather. 

How long do the drones fly? What is the charging time? 

Each of our Lucie micro drones take approximately one hour to charge and can fly for up to 3 minutes. For a longer effect, you can stagger the micro drones’ take-off and landing.

How many drones can you fly together?

Our technology supports an unlimited number of autonomous drones to fly simultaneously. The optimum number of drones for your project is determined by the available space and the creative concept.   

Do you fly above audiences?

Because our Lucie micro drones only weigh 50g (1.8oz), they are very safe when flying near or above people.In most cases we fly above the stage area and performers on stage. In one-time events we have performed above the audience as well. 

How can I get your drones at my event?

Depending on your requirements we will typically need a 4 to 12-week lead-time. We'll develop a creative concept for the drone show choreography and will produce a first 3D animation for your review. We'll also start assembling the equipment you'll need. Once we have shipped the equipment, Verity will come on site for the installation, or we’ll train your staff to do the installation themselves.  If you’re doing a one-time event, our staff will then remain on-site to operate the drone show.  If you’re planning a permanent installation, we will train your staff to operate the drone show and do regular drone maintenance. 

How much maintenance does the system need? 

Our Lucie micro drones are equipped with sensors to monitor their status and will tell you when they require maintenance. We will train the local crew to perform maintenance on the drones. 

How much weight can your drones carry?

Our Lucie micro drones weigh 50g (1.8oz) and are not designed to carry loads. However, we have developed ultra-light weight costumes, which can be attached to the drones, if desired. 

How can I customize the drones for my project?

We can accommodate several types of customization. For example, we can offer client-specific, custom-made costumes. This will be a customized creative and technical project with lead times between 4 and 8 months. We also offer costume design services for the Lucie micro drones, and other technical customization services. These services will incur additional costs and longer lead times. What flight space can you cover?

We’ve covered indoor event spaces up to small sporting arena size. There is no upper size limit.

My venue has a no-drone policy, will this be a problem?

We’ve had approval to fly in many different venues, in more than 20 countries worldwide. Because our Lucie micro drones are so light and safe, we’ve also been approved to fly in venues with no-drone policies like Changi Airport in Singapore. We will support you in obtaining approval in your venue if required.
